We're treating the planet like a dumping ground

There are many pollution issues that need to be addressed as a matter of urgency, but some of the easiest to deal with are those of pollution by plastics, which are unnecessary and fairly easily prevented. The scale has recently been highlighted by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, which calculated that on the current path, by 2050 the weight of plastics in the ocean will exceed the weight of fish.

Natalie has taken part in the successful campaign to win government agreement for a ban on microbeads, after earlier campaigning for the now very successful plastic bag charge.

Attention has now moved on to plastic bottles and disposable coffee cups. Thirty five million plastic bottles are bought every day in the UK, 200 per person per year on average, but 44% are not recycled.

The Green Party is calling for a bottle deposit scheme to be introduced in the UK, as successfully used in 11 other European states, where recycling rates often exceed 90%.
